Crime is on the rise at a very rapid rate and it has affected every domain and sphere of the society. New forms of crimes also have emerged with the advent of modern technology which makes it necessary for CJS professionals to equip themselves according to the present context. Massive increasing emphasis on professional preparation in criminal justice careers necessitates Criminology and Criminal justice as a rapidly expanding field of academic study. The Department of Criminology and Police studies has designed the courses for those who wish to obtain Master’s degree as a suitable for entry into the criminal justice professions, those employed in the criminal justice system especially in policing, who wish to acquire job-related knowledge or broaden their perspectives and those interested in an academic career in higher education, who wish to obtain a master’s degree before entering a doctoral program. Department of Law
Legal education, Legal Research and Legal awareness have an important role to play in the establishment of law-abiding society, protecting the rule of law and democracy as a whole. The gap between the "law in books" and the "law in reality" is widening.

Charles Wood, the President of the Board of Control of the East India Company, had an important effect on spreading education in India when in 1854 he sent a despatch to Lord Dalhousie, the then Governor-General of India explicitly stated “that it would be advisable to establish in connection with the Universities, Professorships in various branches of learning” and added that “the most important of those branches was law.” Unlike other forms of professional education such as medicine and engineering, legal education is both professional as well as liberal. Legal studies are multi-disciplinary in character.

Lawfulness and legitimacy, in turn, are essential if the law enforcement machineries are to achieve their goals of reducing crime and disorder, enhancing the quality of neighbourhood life, and serving community needs.

Looking to the huge importance of legal education and research especially to meet with the objectives of Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice (SPUP) the Department of Law has been established.
